Perspective ("What makes people act the way they do?" - Ernest Becker) A 30 minute program series in which Steve James & Ken Swain, producers, interview prominent minds and discuss the social philosophy of Ernest Becker (1924-1974). The program is a live multi-camera production, with post-production editing by AES LLC. Perspective is a series of half-hour talk shows that focuses on the discipline of the Science of Humanity and the ideas of Ernest Becker, a cultural anthropologist and interdisciplinary teacher and writer who many describe today as a major twentieth century American thinker. Each show features a recognized expert, who manages to make complex concepts understandable for a general audience. Discussions explore Dr. Becker's central question: What makes people act the way they do? Ernest Becker was the author of 10 books including Denial of Death for which he was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1974. He died of cancer at the age of 49. The Science of Humanity is a synthesis of psychology, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and theology. It includes the work and ideas of some of the greatest thinkers in Western thought, including: Sigmund Freud, Soren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Otto Rank, William James, Norman O. Brown, A.M. Hocart, and Paul Tillich. Perspective appeals to audiences with a general interest in American contemporary thought, students, Ernest Becker enthusiasts, and general audiences who are seeking new awareness and explanations for modern life. Discussions are pragmatic, and focus on practical applications of Becker's work. Some of the topics discussed on the show have included: heroism and self-esteem, freedom, violence and evil, prejudice, religion, childhood development, laughter, America's role in the world, the American culture, money and materialism, health, sex, and the role of women. Episode 14: Daniel Liechty, Ph.D. - Daniel Liechty holds doctoral degrees in both religion studies and counseling. He is the author of 8 books,most recently an anthology of Ernest Becker's writings. Liechty has a background of many years in hospice work, providing counseling services to dying people and their families. Episode 12: Jamie Goldenberg, Ph.D. - Human Sexuality Why are we so obsessed with sex? It is our greatest pleasure, but also our biggest hang up. And what's love got to do with it? Jamie Goldenberg is an experimental social psychologist and a member of the research faculty at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Goldenberg is currently working on the implications of Ernest Becker's ideas for attitudes toward the body, sex, and women. She works from the empirical framework of Terror Management Theory. Episode 11: Jamie Arndt, Ph.D. Money & Materialism Why is it always about money? We worry constalntly about not having enough. We do incredibly destructive things to get it. Why does it run our lives? Dr. Arndt has published 35 articles that examine such topics as how the fear of death influences creativity, self-esteem, aggression, leagl judgements, unconscious processes, and material persuits. Episode 10: Jamie Arndt, Ph.D. - About Health Why in the richest country in the world, are we Americans suffering so from obesity, diabetes, preventable forms of cancer, heart disease, and a host of avoidable health problems? Dr Arndt, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of social psychology at the University of Missouri, and was recently awarded a grant from the Nactional Cancer Institute to study different types of health risk behaviours. Episode 9: Kirby Farrell, Ph.D. - America's place in the world Why is America so alone in its relations with other countries? Are we rescueing the world, or preying upon it? Episode 8: Kirby Farrell, Ph.D.- American Culture Why is there such a sense of frustration in America? Are we a cunsumer utopia, military machine, or prison factory? Are we the land of the free, or home of the afraid? Episode 7: Neil Elgee, M.D.- On Laughter A man is like a fine wine. He starts out like a grape, and it's a woman's job to pick him, stomp on him, and keep him in the dark until he matures into something she would like to have dinner with. What is humour, and why is laughter important? Episode 6: Jerry Piven, Ph.D.- On Child Development Why is it so hard for kids growing up these days? If we love our children, sacrifice for them, see them as our future and source of greatest pride, why do we continue to mestreat them and raise them so badly? Episode 5: Merlyn Mowrey, Ph.D. - On Religion Why is there religious intolerance? If religion is the finest and most noble achievement of humanity, why has it been the source of so much suffering and persecution? Episode 4: Sheldon Solomon, Ph.D. - On Prejudice Why is there prejudice? What is it that makes us hate or at least distrust or live apart from our frellow human beings who may look or acty differently from ourselves? Episode 3: Jerry Piven, Ph.D. - On Violence and Evil Why is there violence? Why, in the 21st Century, does humankind still resort to violence and killing one anothyer to settle our differences? Episode 2: Merlyn Mowrey, Ph.D. - On Freedom What is Liberty? In our "land of the freee and home of the brave", why are we slaves to the almighty dollar, our jobs, and status symbols? Why do we hand over our freedom and power so readily to others? Episode 1: Sheldon Solomon, Ph.D. - On Self-esteem Why is the world so confusing? On the one hand we have wars, violence, pollution, and injustice. On the other, we have love, charity, technology, and social progress. What is behind all of the wonderfully positive and monstrously negative aspects of our lives? What are the forces that drive and motivate people? Episode 0: Steve Haken Why Perspective Are you open to changing your perspective? Are you satisfied with the world the way it is? Steve Haken, LLD did his undergraduate work in philosophy with a special interest in the work of William James, and American philosophy.
